AZTECS VISIT USD, HOST UNLV THIS WEEK
San Diego State will remain in town this week for a pair of matches, one non-conference contest away and one Mountain West match at home. The Aztecs will be in action on Tuesday, Oct. 18, when they make the short trip across town to face the University of San Diego at 7:00 p.m. (PT) in at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. SDSU will resume league play on Friday, Oct. 21, with a contest against UNLV at 6:00 p.m. (PT) on Aztec Court in Peterson Gym. The match against the Rebels will be televised live on The MTN network with Anne Marie Anderson and Amy Gant calling the action.
SERIES RECORDS
San Diego State holds a 25-24 edge in its series vs. San Diego that dates back to the 1977 season. The Toreros have won the last eight and 12 of the previous 13 meetings between the teams. SDSU's last victory over USD came during the 2003 season in a five-set victory in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Aztecs are 7-10 vs. San Diego at home, 8-11 at USD and 10-3 on neutral courts.
The Aztecs' all-time record against UNLV stands at 20-13 since the teams first met during the 1985 campaign when both were members of the Western Athletic Conference. San Diego State had won the last five encounters between the teams before the Rebels captured a three-set win in Las Vegas last month. SDSU is 12-3 vs. UNLV at home, 8-9 in Las Vegas and 0-1 on neutral courts.
HANNASCH LEADS THE OFFENSE
Junior middle blocker Andrea Hannasch led all players in kills in both of SDSU's matches last week as she helped the Aztecs win a pair conference matches. Her 13 kills in each contest were five more than the next-highest individual total. Her .765 hitting percentage in the win over Boise State was a career high as she had no errors in the match on 17 attacks. Over the two wins she averaged 4.83 points per set and hit over .622 for the week.
FOUCH ASSISTS
Setter Johnna Fouch averaged just over 12 assists per set in last week's wins over Air force and Boise State. She leads the conference in all games with an average of 11.32 assists per set while her league-match average of 11.69 ranks second. Her overall assist average ranks 18th in NCAA Division I this week. She set a career high 65 assists in the victory at TCU on Oct. 6.
SEXTON SERVES IT UP
Senior outside hitter Kyley Sexton had five service aces in the five sets in which she played last week including three vs. Boise State. She is averaging 0.39 aces per set, a mark which would lead the conference if she had not missed several matches with an ankle injury in late September. Sexton had a career-high four service aces in the over Nevada on Aug. 27.
TOUGH AS STEEL
Freshman right side hitter Chaiymin Steel hit .426 is the Aztecs' wins over Air Force and Boise State last week. She averaged 2.80 kills and 1.20 digs per set in those two matches.
JACKELS DIGGIN' IT
Libero Kristi Jackels saw a streak of double-figure dig efforts end in the win over Boise State. She had finished in double figures in digs in every match this season with a high of 26 vs. Tulane on Sept. 2. Going back to last season, that streak had extended to 19 consecutive matches. Jackels has joined the 1,000 dig club for her two-plus year career as an Aztec and enters the week with 1,171 digs to rank fifth on the SDSU all-time list.
THE RECORD BOOK
A trio of Aztecs will make their marks in the SDSU career record listings before the end of the 2011 season. Libero Kristi Jackels' 1,171 digs is fourth on the career Aztec top 10. Third place is currently held by Juliana Cezar (1993-96) with 1,369 career digs. Sophomore setter Johnna Fouch has moved into the number-nine spot in career assists with 1,975. Former Aztec Melissa Stokes (1986-88) ranks ninth on the list with 2,239 assists. In addition, Andrea Hannasch needs four block assists to catch Rene Pankopf (1983-86) for the No. 10 spot on that list with 324 career BAs.
AZTEC NOTES
San Diego's win over Boise State last Saturday (Oct. 15) was its four straight victory. It marks the Aztecs' longest win streak since the 2007 season when they won six in a row ... SDSU had a team hitting percentage of .352 over last week's two matches ... The Aztecs nine service aces vs. Boise State were its second-highest total of the season and came in just three sets. The team high of 11 aces was set vs. Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 20) in five sets ... As a team San Diego State stands first in the conference in kills, assists and service aces in all matches.
