SAN DIEGO - San Diego State redshirt sophomore Sophie Metz landed on the Soccer America Team of the Week after her performance last week at TCU and Texas, the website announced on Wednesday. The honor comes two days after she was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week.
In the outing at TCU, Metz snapped SDSU's 357-minute, 49-second scoring drought when she took a cross from Rachael McGlinchy and punched in her shot from the middle of the box past the Horned Frog goalkeeper at the 3:17 mark. Later with the Aztecs ahead, 2-0, the redshirt sophomore took a free kick and the rebound found Hannah Keane, who headed the ball into the net. Metz was credited with the assist and her third point at the 71:30 mark. The goal and the assist were the first of her Aztec career after transferring from UCLA.
Two days later at Texas, the Pleasanton, Calif., native took a beautifully placed ball from Cat Walker and scored from inside the box on a left-footed sliding kick that rattled the upper left corner of the net. The 44th-minute goal proved to be the game-winner, which upped her total to a team-high-tying two game-winning scores.
For the week, Metz finished with two goals, both game-winners, an assist and had five points.
Metz is the seventh Aztec to be named to the Soccer America Team of the Week and the first since 2009.
Metz and the Aztecs return to action on Sunday, Oct. 14, when they play host to Boise State at 11 a.m. PT at SDSU Sports Deck. Prior to the game, San Diego State will honor its lone senior in Walker. Admission to the final home contest of 2011 is free.
