Stanford Intercollegiate Round 1 Results

In a tournament with 14 teams ranked in the top 50 nationally, the No. 38 San Diego State women's golf squad posted a respectable 2-over 286 in the first round Friday of the 54-hole Stanford Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. The Aztecs are currently in eighth place, just four strokes out of the top five, and are one stroke ahead of both No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 9 Texas at the par-71, 6,148-yard Stanford Golf Course.

Each of SDSU's top four golfers are within a stroke of one another, as senior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) leads the way with her season-low 1-under 70 to put her in a 12-way tie for 13th place. Enarsson had four birdies, including on back-to-back efforts on the No. 1 and No. 2 holes, and three bogeys to go with 11 pars.

Teammate junior Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) matched Enarsson's four birdies with two in a row on the par-5 seventh and the par-3 eighth holes, but finished the round with a bogey on the ninth hole to currently stand in a tie for 25th with an even-par 71. Sophomore Tessa The (Los Altos, Calif.), playing in her second tournament as an Aztec, had a phenomenal start to the day, going 2-under through the first 10 holes, but she bogeyed the second hole and then had three more bogeys over a four-hole span to card a 1-over 72.

SDSU freshman Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.) is tied for 43rd place with her 2-over 73, including a pair of birdies, while junior Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) was at 6-over par before triple bogeying the par-4 sixth hole and eventually ended at 10-over 81 to tie for 85th.

Aztec junior Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy), who is competing individually, was never able to find any consistency, carding 12 bogeys and a double bogey against only four pars and a birdie for a 13-over 84 to tie for 87th place.

Top-ranked and reigning national champions UCLA tied for the low round of the day along with No. 36 Washington at 7-under 277. Vanderbilt's Mariana Alex owns the individual lead by one stroke with an impressive 6-under 65, including five birdies and an eagle.

The second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate will begin Saturday for the Aztecs at 8:30 a.m. PT from the first hole. SDSU will be paired with Arizona State and Texas. Live results are available on golfstat.com.
