BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Marianne Hogan took third of 60 runners to lead the San Diego State cross country team to a third-place team finish at the UNLV Desert Invitational Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City, Nev.
The Aztecs finished with 99 points, narrowly beating host and MW foe UNLV (101). Utah won the six-team meet with 33 points, followed by Nevada (57), SDSU (99), the Rebels (101), Cal State Northridge (106) and Dixie State (149).
Hogan completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 28 seconds, just five seconds back of runner-up finisher Susannah Hurst of Utah (18:23). Unattached runner Madeline MacDonald won the race in 18:14. It was the ninth consecutive race that Hogan has been San Diego State's top finisher.
Josefine Koskinen was the Aztecs' No. 2 runner for the third straight race, taking 16th in 19:27. It was the fastest 5K time of her career.
Taylor Johnson was SDSU's third runner to cross the finish line in 23rd-place (20:00), while Hannah Carman (37th, 20:52) and Amanda Okun (39th, 21:06) rounded out the team's top five. Okun's time was a more than 43 seconds faster than her previous fastest 5K (21:49.5 on Sept. 17 at the Aztec Invitational).
Kaitlyn Harrison (21:17) and Melissa Wendorf (21:18) were 40th and 41st, respectively, to crack San Diego State's top seven. Megan Hughes (42nd, 21:28), Amy Reaser (43rd, 21:38 - PR) and Monique Martinez (47th, 22:38) also competed for the Aztecs.
SDSU will participate in UC San Diego's Triton Classic on Saturday at 9 a.m. PT in its final meet before the Mountain West Championships (Oct. 29 in Fort Collins, Colo.).
