SAN DIEGO - Riding the momentum of a seven-match unbeaten streak, the San Diego State men's soccer team is ranked 24th in the latest College Soccer News poll. In addition, the Aztecs (7-1-2, 2-0 Pac-12) are No. 28 by Top Drawer Soccer and fourth in a Far West Region poll.
The No. 24 ranking is SDSU's best in the College Soccer News poll since earning a No. 21 ranking on Aug. 28, 2006. Behind San Diego State in the top 30 are Penn State (No. 25), Furman (No. 26), Providence (No. 27), Cal State Fullerton (No. 28), Xavier (No. 29) and Bradley (No. 30).
In the Top Drawer Soccer poll, which is a running attempt to project the postseason NCAA tournament, including every automatic berth, San Diego State is ranked 28th. Duke (No. 25), Santa Clara (No. 26) and Ohio State (No. 27) are just ahead of the Aztecs, while Charlotte (No. 29) and Wisconsin (No. 30) are just below.
SDSU is also fourth in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire Far West Region poll, tied for the second highest in head coach Lev Kirshner's 12-year tenure. UCLA, which San Diego State plays twice this season (Oct. 16 in Los Angeles, Nov. 12 in San Diego), is third, while Washington, the Aztecs' Sunday opponent, is ninth.
The other three national polls - NSCAA/Continental Tire, Soccer America and Soccer Times - will be released Tuesday.
SDSU looks to continue its solid start to Pac-12 play when it heads to the Pacific Northwest for games at Oregon State (7 p.m. PT Friday) and Washington (2:30 p.m. PT Sunday).
