2011 Dick McGuire Day One Results

San Diego State women's golfer Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) is currently in second place through 36 holes Sunday with a 5-under 141 at the season-opening tournament, the 32nd annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. As a team, the Aztecs have kicked off Leslie Spalding's first event as head coach in a tie for fourth place with an 8-over 592 at the par-73, 6,187-yard UNM Championship Golf Course.

Clark, a junior, carded the low round of her collegiate career to start the tournament with a 5-under 68, including five birdies and 13 pars. The 68 is her career low by three strokes, is the team's best 18 holes since October 2009 and tied as the low round in the first day at the Dick McGuire. Clark added an even-par 73 in the afternoon, highlighted by three more birdies, to currently sit two strokes off the lead held by New Mexico's Sofia Hoglund (7-under 139).

Senior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) is the second Aztec in the top 20, having cut three strokes off her opening round to move from a tie for 38th place up into a tie for 19th with a 3-over 149. SDSU junior Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.), who duplicated Enarsson's 76 in the first 18 holes, also bounced back in the afternoon with a 74 to put her in a tie for 24th at 4-over 150.

Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Aztec freshman Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.) opened with a 74, including four birdies, but ran into some trouble in the second round with two double bogeys and seven bogeys against only three birdies for an 81. Alston dropped from 14th all the way into a tie for 63rd with a 9-over 155.

Junior Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy), meanwhile, cut four strokes off her opening round, but still finds herself in a tie for 84th place out of 96 golfers at 14-over 160.

Northwestern is currently atop the team leaderboard by two strokes over second place Denver with a 2-over 586. Fellow Mountain West member TCU is in third with a 5-over 589, followed by the Aztecs and Baylor, who are tied for fourth.

The 32nd annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational concludes Monday with the final 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. MT with a shotgun start. Live results are available on golfstat.com.
