SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore wide receiver Colin Lockett (Diamond Bar, Calif.) is among 19 players who were added Friday to the 2011 Biletnikoff Award Watch List by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation. Lockett is now one of 94 candidates up for the honor, which is handed out annually to the nation's most outstanding college football wide receiver.
Lockett is in his first season on the offensive side of the ball, as he switched from defensive back this past summer. His first career reception was a 59-yard effort in the season-opener with Cal Poly, finishing the night with three catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. A week later at Army, he scored on the game's second play from scrimmage on a 68-yard reception and went on to post his first career 100-yard receiving effort with five grabs for 113 yards. Against Washington State, Lockett had four catches for 59 yards, giving him a team-best 12 receptions for 254 yards on the season.
Lockett, who has also returned a kickoff for a score, currently ranks 40th nationally in receiving yards per outing (84.7) and is first in the Mountain West Conference in yards per catch (21.2).
A list of 10 semifinalists will be released on Nov. 14, before being cut down to three finalists on Nov. 21. The winner will be announced on ESPN on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 8. The honor will be officially presented to the winner at a banquet on Feb. 11, 2012.
This is the third consecutive season an Aztec had been tabbed to the Biletnikoff Watch List, as former standout Vincent Brown was a two-time selection in 2010 and in 2009, when he was a semifinalist for the award. In 2002, SDSU's J.R. Tolver (semifinalist) and Kassim Osgood (preseason) were both candidates.
The Biletnikoff award dates back to 1994, and is named for Fred Biletnikoff, who was an All-America wideout at Florida State and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
