SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State cross country team heads north to Palo Alto, Calif., to compete in the 38th edition of the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. The Aztecs will run in the 6,000-meter race, which will begin at 11:30 a.m. PT on the Stanford Golf Course.
SDSU is coming off a fifth-place finish at the season-opening 67th annual Aztec Invitational last Saturday (Sept. 17). San Diego State was led once again by Marianne Hogan, who won the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 21.9 seconds, easily outdistancing runner-up Erica Capellino of USC. Hogan defeated 71 collegiate runners and four unattached athletes en route to winning her second career race (2010 Pomona-Pitzer Invitational). For her efforts, Hogan was named the Co-Mountain West Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
Josefine Koskinen (21st place, 19:30.6), Taylor Johnson (37th, 20:11.3), Megan Hughes (44th, 20:36.3) and Hannah Carmen (47th, 20:38.7) all placed in the top 50 for the Aztecs.
Last year, SDSU took 13th of 24 teams at the Stanford Invitational. Hogan was 23rd of 212 runners at last year's race, covering the 6K course in 21:32. Current San Diego State runners Koskinen (109th, 23:28), Sabrina Rathor (183rd, 25:04) and Melissa Bunn (191st, 25:34) also ran at the invite.
The Aztecs will be sending Hogan, Koskinen, Johnson, Hughes, Carmen, Melissa Wendorf and Kaitlyn Harrison to Saturday's 6K.
Results for the Stanford Invitational will be posted on Stanford's official website at GoStanford.com.
