HOUSTON - Senior Daniel Steres (Calabasas, Calif.) scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the San Diego State men's soccer team to its fourth consecutive victory and a 4-1 win over Houston Baptist Sunday night in Houston.
Steres, who scored the Aztecs' (5-1-1) first goal on Friday night in their 2-1 overtime win at Oral Roberts, scored the game's first goal and the team's third score. Steres' first goal came in the 11th minute off a corner kick by junior Jose Altamirano (San Diego/Southwest HS).
It was the lone goal of the first half, which saw SDSU own a commanding 6-1 shot advantage, including a 4-1 lead with shots on net.
San Diego State stretched its lead to 2-1 early in the second half when junior Ata Ozbay (Barrington, Ill./Univ. of Wisconsin) finished off a pass from Steres at the 54:36 mark. It was Ozbay's second goal of the season.
Steres added to the Aztecs' total in the 71st minute, putting away a shot past the Huskies' (0-6-1) goalkeeper Daniel Boyer.
Redshirt sophomore Jordan Ongaro (Edmonton, Alberta) scored SDSU's final goal at the 72:51 mark. Sophomore Kody Duff (Roseville, Calif.) and redshirt sophomore Morgan Sacco (Greeley, Colo.) each earned assists on Ongaro's goal, his second of the season.
HBU finally got on the scoreboard in the 82nd minute on an own goal.
San Diego State outshot Houston Baptist, 16-5, including a dominating 12-2 advantage on net. The Aztecs won their 14th consecutive match when leading at the half.
Ozbay and redshirt sophomore John Pegg (Edmonton, Alberta) had three shots apiece to pace SDSU, while sophomore Miles Byass (Highland, Calif.), Duff, Ongaro and Steres each fired two shots.
Redshirt sophomore Blake Hylen (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) made two saves over the first 76 minutes before giving way to redshirt freshman Tim Peitsch (Perry Hall, Md.), who played the final 14 minutes in net without making a stop.
San Diego State returns to Montezuma Road on Saturday (Sept. 24) for a match against Central Arkansas at 2 p.m. PT. Following the game will be a free youth clinic, which is available to all male soccer players between the ages of 8 and 17 who wear their soccer jersey (while supplies last).
