2011-12 SDSU Women's Tennis Schedule
San Diego State women's tennis head coach Peter Mattera unveiled his squad's 2011-12 schedule on Wednesday. The Aztecs will play host to three tournaments in the Fall, take on eight NCAA Tournament teams in the spring and roll out the welcome mat for the Mountain West as the Championship will make its way to Montezuma Mesa.
The Scarlet and Black will open the competition season by playing host to the SDSU Fall Classic I at Aztec Tennis Center, Sept. 30-Oct. 2. The Riviera/ITA All-American Championships are set to follow two days later on Oct. 4.
Once again, San Diego State will play host to the USTA/ITA Regional Championships at Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma. The five-day event, which will feature Division I players from the Southwest Region, is set to run from Oct. 20-24.
The Aztecs will wrap up the Fall season at home when they play host to the SDSU Fall Classic II. The tournament is scheduled for Nov. 11-13 at Aztec Tennis Center.
San Diego State will open the dual-match season on Jan. 21 when it welcomes both UC Riverside and CS Fullerton to Montezuma Mesa. The UCR contest is set for 9 a.m. PT and will precede the CSUF tilt, which is slated for a 4 p.m. PT start.
After its season-opening home doubleheader, the Aztecs hit the road for three consecutive matches. Pepperdine is first up on Jan. 25 and will be following by trips to California and Arizona on Feb. 1 and Feb. 11, respectively. All three teams qualified for the 2011 NCAA Tournament with the Golden Bears advancing to the Round of 16 and the Waves moving on to the second round.
With three road matches in the books, SDSU will enjoy three straight at home beginning with Hawai'i on Feb. 13. Five days later on Feb. 18, UC Irvine heads south for a noon PT date before LSU travels to the Pacific Time Zone for a non-conference contest on Feb. 21.
A trip to Seattle, Wash., and two formidable opponents await San Diego State at the end of February. The Aztecs will face the hosts, Washington, on Feb. 24. The Huskies advanced to the second round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The next day, SDSU will play another 2010 NCAA Tournament club in Saint Mary's.
The run of NCAA Tournament participants from a year ago continues after the trip to the Northwest as the Aztecs travel to Long Beach State. The road match is set for March 2 at 2 p.m. PT.
Loyola Marymount is locked in to visit SDSU on March 4 in what is the first of five straight home dates for the Aztecs. UC Santa Barbara (March 9) is next on the docket and is followed by Louisville (March 15), Colorado State (March 24) and Wyoming (March 25). The CSU and Wyoming matches are San Diego State's only home Mountain West contests of the 2012 campaign.
With MW action underway, SDSU will head to Las Vegas for neutral-site matches against TCU and New Mexico on March 31 and April 1, respectively. The next week, San Diego State will head to Colorado Springs, Colo., for another neutral-site contest vs. Boise State on April 7, before taking on Air Force on April 8.
The Aztecs take a brief break from conference action when they return home to face cross-town foe San Diego. The City Championship is up for grabs on April 11 at 2 p.m. PT at Aztec Tennis Center.
San Diego State will close out MW play at UNLV on April 14, before welcoming San Francisco to Aztec Tennis Center for Senior Day. The regular-season finale is set for 2 p.m. PT.
With the dual season behind them, SDSU will play host to the MW Championship at Aztec Tennis Center. The tournament is slated for April 26-29.
San Diego State returns six letterwinners from last year's squad that finished with 15 victories and a No. 51 national ranking. Among those returning are Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais, who were ranked as high as No. 46 in ITA doubles rankings and finished at No. 90. Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison are back as well and the pair was ranked as high as No. 27 in the doubles poll and finished the season as the 10th-best duo in the Southwest Region. In the singles poll, Aguilar was ranked as high as 65th during the 2011 campaign.
