SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State All-American pitcher Addison Reed made his major league debut this past weekend with an appearance for the Chicago White Sox in their game against Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 4. In 1.2 innings of relief against the division-leading Tigers, he allowed a run on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Reed was a three-year letterwinner at SDSU (2008-10) who worked as a reliever his first two season and became the team's No. 1 starter as a junior. During his sophomore campaign he moved into the role of closer and recorded 24 saves with a 0.65 earned run average. He was named the 2009 National Stopper of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and was consensus All-America selection.
As a starter during his junior season, he compiled an 8-2 record with a2.50 ERA. He recoded 90 strikeouts and allowed only seven walks over 79.1 innings pitched. He was selected in the third round of the 2010 MLB draft by the White Sox.
Reed is one of four former San Diego State pitchers currently playing for Major League Clubs. The others include Stephen Strasburg (Washington), Aaron Harang (San Diego) and Justin Masterson. In addition, former Aztec Anthony Gwynn is an outfielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers while pitcher Bruce Billings has appeared with both Colorado and Oakland this season.
