COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State redshirt senior Cat Walker has been named Mountain West Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. She shares the award with Air Force's McKenna Fox and the honor is the second of her career, and first since Oct. 20, 2008.
Last Friday, the Folsom, Calif., native successfully returned from an ACL injury that sidelined her for the entire 2010 campaign. In the 1-0 season-opening victory over Arizona, her first match in 642 days, Walker provided the game-winner when she put her penalty shot past the Wildcat goalkeeper in the 68th minute. Her game-winning score marked her third straight goal, a streak that dates to 2009, which has provided the Aztecs with the decision.
Two days later at California, SDSU found itself trailing 1-0, but with momentum on its side, Walker cashed in on one of the many opportunities and tied the game at 1-1 in the 86th minute. The senior took a pass from redshirt junior Tiffany Hurst and tucked her shot into the back right corner.
With two goals for the week, Walker now has 26 career goals and moved into sole possession of fourth place on the school's all-time list.
After one week of action, Walker ranks second in the MW in shots (10), shots per game (5.0), points (4), points per game (2.0), goals (2) and goals per game (1.0).
This is the first offensive player of the week award for an Aztec since Sarah Halverson was recognized on Nov. 2, 2009. In fact, this is just the second offensive weekly honor since Walker garnered accolades in 2008.
San Diego State returns home on Friday, Aug. 26, when it plays host to Minnesota. First tap is set for 4 p.m. PT at SDSU Sports Deck. Admission is free.
