2011-12 Aztec Basketball Schedule
Five nationally-televised games and two meetings with new league member Boise State highlight the San Diego State women's basketball team's 2012 Mountain West schedule announced Friday by Aztec head coach Beth Burns.
"This is perhaps, more than any other year that I have been here, the season where it's anyone's league (title) to get," Burns said. "We were a very senior-laden conference last year and it will come down to what the student-athletes have done over the summer and who the impactful freshmen are coming into the conference that will go a long way toward dictating who will come out on top in the end. All you can ask for is the opportunity to win a title and that will make for an exciting year."
SDSU will begin its 13th season of Mountain West play on Wednesday, Jan. 11, when it plays host to TCU at 7 p.m. at Viejas Arena. The Lady Frogs' final visit to San Diego as a member of the MW will be televised on The Mtn.
For the second consecutive year, the Aztecs' first conference road game will be at UNLV on Jan. 14, before coming home to tangle with New Mexico on Jan. 18. Following an away game with Air Force, SDSU has two consecutive home dates, both of which will be televised. Wyoming comes to town for a special Tuesday evening contest at 7:30 p.m. PT on The Mtn. on Jan. 24. The team then has four days to prepare for a match-up with Colorado State, which will be carried on CBS Sports Network on Saturday, Jan. 28.
San Diego State's first meeting since 2005 with new league member Boise State takes place in Boise to open the month of February. The Aztecs begin the second half of MW action on CBS Sports Network at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday, Feb. 4, before all eight conference teams enjoy a bye date on Feb. 8.
SDSU resumes action on Feb. 11 at Viejas Arena against UNLV and then continues league play with three of its next four games away from home, including another televised contest (The Mtn.) with Wyoming in Laramie on Feb. 21. With only eight league squads in 2012, Mountain West play ends during the month of February for the first time in conference history, as the Aztecs round out the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 29, in San Diego against Boise State.
The 2012 Mountain West championship will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., for the sixth-straight year and the 10th time overall on March 7-10, at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The non-conference portion of the team's 2011-12 slate was announced earlier this month and includes three Pac-12 foes and two tournaments, the Jack In The Box Rainbow Wahine Classic in mid-November and the annual San Diego Surf `N Slam in late December. The league office also released that San Diego State's annual game against crosstown foe San Diego will be televised live on the Mtn. on Dec. 8, at 7 p.m.
"We're committed to an exciting brand of basketball," Burns said. "We like our energy, talent, athleticism and the way our rookies have approached things to date. With so many new faces, we will be a fun team to watch as we grow and get better throughout the season."
