DES MOINES, Iowa - San Diego State junior Whitney Ashley finished seventh in the discus throw on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Ashley, who was seeded 10th in the event heading into the meet, threw the discus 179 feet, 7 inches, the third-best mark in school history. Ashley finished behind Michigan State's Beth Rohl (181-8) and ahead of Kansas' Jessica Maroszek (173-11) in an event won by Northwestern State's Trecey Rew (192-4).
Ashley's best mark came on her second attempt after registering a 163-4 on the opening throw and before her only foul. Ranked fifth heading into the finals with the 179-7, Ashley went 172-3, 175-1 and 167-11 over her final three throws to finish in seventh place. Her best mark coming into the weekend was 173-5.
With her seventh-place finish, Ashley earned first-team USTFCCCA All-America honors.
