SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Brandon Meredith has been selected in the 2011 MLB draft on the second day of the annual amateur player selection process. The junior outfielder/first baseman was a sixth-round pick of the Houston Astros.
Meredith (Chula Vista, Calif./Montgomery HS) was a second-team all-Mountain West Conference selection this past season after hitting .278 with five doubles, two home runs, 18 RBI and 19 runs scored in 24 league contests. He was a second-team all-MWC selection as a freshman in 2009 and won first-team honors during the 2010 campaign.
Overall he batted .268 during the 2011 season and led the Aztecs in runs (44), triples (4) and home runs (5) while ranking second in doubles (15) and walks (41) and on-base percentage (.415). He also led the team with 11 multiple-RBI games and committed only one error in 56 contests for a .991 fielding percentage.
Meredith, who came to SDSU after being drafted in the 15th round by Tampa Bay after his senior year of high school (2008), has a three-year career batting average of .320 as an Aztec. He also ranks among the all-time school top 20 in several offensive categories including doubles (9th with 43), walks (8th with 102), RBI (9th with 136), hit by pitch (2nd with 35), runs (13th with 150) and hits (18th with 204).
