EUGENE, Ore. - San Diego State freshman Allison Reaser won three of the four events on the first day of the heptathlon to move into first place at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Reaser amassed 3,174 points after four of the seven events, 11 points ahead of runner-up and unattached competitor Lindsay Vollmer (3,163). Karli Johonnot (3,136), Alex Gochenour (3,126) and Wisconsin's Deanna Latham (3,112) are all within 100 points of Reaser. Twenty-three athletes started the two-day event with the top two earning the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the 2011 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships from July 22-24 at the Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Fla.
Reaser began the day by winning the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.99 seconds. It was the fifth time this season (of 12 chances) that she broke 14.00 in the event. The time of 13.99 was good enough for 980 points.
In the high jump, Reaser cleared 4 feet, 10 ¼ inches. The mark was 19th of the 23 competitors, but did add 599 points to her total.
Reaser came back strong in the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 11.72 meters (38-5 ½). It was her best throw of the season and gave her an additional 643 points.
Reaser closed the day by winning the 200 by more than a ½ second with a time of 24.30. It was her fastest time of the season and the third-fastest clocking by an Aztec this year. The 952 points moved her into first place heading into tomorrow's final three events.
Reaser will wrap up the heptathlon tomorrow (Friday, June 24) with the long jump (9:40 a.m. PT), javelin throw (10:55 a.m. PT) and the 800 (12:30 p.m. PT).
In the discus, SDSU's Jasmine Burrell was unable to get off a clean throw, fouling on all three of her attempts. Burrell, who redshirted her first season on The Mesa, was the top seed heading into the weekend.
