The seventh-ranked San Diego State men's golf team saw its day one lead reduced from five to just one stroke, as the Aztecs posted a second-round 3-under 281 Friday at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Championships in Tucson, Ariz. With 18 holes remaining, SDSU is at 9-under 559, and is only one stroke better than UNLV, which moved from sixth all the way to second place with its' tournament-low 273 at the par-71, 7,144-yard OMNI Tucson National Golf Course.
The Aztecs, who are currently six strokes better than third-place TCU, were a combined 9-under par for the round heading into the final two holes of the afternoon. The team, however, posted five bogeys and one double bogey between the five golfers to see what could have been at least a seven-stroke advantage reduced to just a single stroke.
Individually, SDSU senior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) continues to have his best tournament of the season, tallying a second-round 68 to move from second into a three-way tie for first place with a 7-under 135, along with UNLV's Derek Ernst and day-one leader Gabe Maier of Wyoming. Carlsson was the only player in the field to log a bogey-free round on Thursday and extended that trend by carding an eagle, two birdies and 13 pars through his first 16 holes before finally seeing that streak come to an end with a bogey on the par-3 17th. Carlsson is aiming to become just the second Aztec in the MWC's 12-year history to earn an outright individual title since John Lepak in 2001.
Joining the senior in the top 10 is a pair of SDSU juniors in Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) and J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), who are tied for eighth place at 2-under 140. Spaun fired his second consecutive 70 with four birdies, while Kang was at 1-under until bogeying the final two holes to log a 72.
Aztec junior Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) took one stroke off his first-round score and sophomore Tom Berry (New Haw, England) improved by three to both find themselves in a tie for 22nd place with a 3-over 145.
San Diego State will look to wrap up its' first-ever MWC title following Saturday's final 18 holes, as it will be paired with UNLV and TCU starting at the first tee at 8:40 a.m. PT. Live results will once again be available on goaztecs.com and golfstat.com.
