The San Diego State women's golf team is in a three-way tie for 14th place with New Mexico and Tulsa after the first day of the 2011 NCAA West Regional Thursday in Auburn, Wash. The Aztecs, who are making back-to-back regional appearances for the first time in school history, logged a first-round 22-over 310 and are just six strokes out of the top 10 in the 24-school field at the par-72, 6,266-yard Washington National Golf Club.

All five SDSU golfers are within at least three strokes of one another, including three who posted the same score through the first 18 holes. Junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), who barely missed out on an individual trip to nationals a year ago, is the top Aztec with her 4-over 76, including two of the team's four total birdies on the day, to tie her for 41st.

Senior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) and sophomores Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) and Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy) are all knotted in 66th place with a first-round 78. Sophomore Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) had seven bogeys through her first 11 holes, but then managed to notch six pars on her final seven to finish the day with a 7-over 79 to tie for 78th.

Top-ranked USC currently sits atop the team leaderboard by two strokes over No. 6 Virginia with an even-par 288. Thirteenth-ranked Tennessee is in third place with a 292, while there is an eight-stroke gap between the Lady Vols and the next squad in No. 22 UC Davis, which notched a 12-over 300.

Tennessee's Erica Popson had the best round of the day with her 4-under 68, followed by USC's Sophia Popov and UC Davis' Demi Runas, who are both one stroke off the lead. In all, only four of the 126 golfers finished the 18 holes under par.

San Diego State will once again be paired with fellow Mountain West Conference members BYU and New Mexico for Friday's second round, starting from the first hole at 8 a.m. PT. The top eight teams and low two individuals not on those squads will advance out of the west regional to the NCAA national championships in Bryan, Texas, May 17-20.
