The seventh-ranked San Diego State men's golf team has a five-stroke lead through the first 18 holes Thursday at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Championships in Tucson, Ariz. The Aztecs shot a 6-under 278 for their best opening round in the 12-year history of the MWC tournament, and have three players in the top seven at the par-71, 7,144-yard OMNI Tucson National Golf Course.

SDSU senior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) posted his lowest round in four trips to the league championships with a 4-under 67 to put him in a tie for second place, just two strokes behind Wyoming's Gabe Maier, who shot a 65. Carlsson started with 11 consecutive pars and followed that up with four birdies over his next five holes, including three in a row on holes 14-16. He finished the afternoon with two more pars and was the only golfer in the 45-player field to tally a bogey-free round. Carlsson's 67 is a season low by one stroke, beating his previous best of 68, which he carded at the USC Invitational in February.

Aztec juniors Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) and J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) also started the tournament off well, as Kang is in fourth place at 3-under 68, including a team-high six birdies, while Spaun is two strokes behind him with a 70 to sit in a three-way tie for seventh.

Junior Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) was at even-par through the first 17 holes, but then double bogeyed the par-4 18th hole to drop into 22nd place with a 2-over 73. Sophomore Tom Berry (New Haw, England), who was third in his MWC debut on the same course a year ago, rounded out the Aztec contingent in a tie for 30th with a 74.

Trailing the Aztecs on the team leaderboard are No. 40 TCU and BYU, who are knotted at 1-under 283. Reigning champion Colorado State and Wyoming are also tied at 286, while No. 36 UNLV is fourth, but is only four strokes out of second place with its first-round 287.

San Diego State, which is seeking its first-ever MWC title, will be paired with TCU and BYU for Friday's second round starting at 8:40 a.m. MST from the first hole. Live results for the three-day, 54-hole event are available on goaztecs.com and golfstat.com.
