Pop Warner Clinic 05/14/11

The San Diego State football team held a Pop Warner Clinic this past weekend for league coaches around the area. The event served as an opportunity for SDSU to interact with youth football coaches and improve their skills to help in the development of players.

"I think if young people are taught the right fundamentals when they first start playing, it improves their chances to play longer and plus it improves their chances of less injuries," head coach Rocky Long said. "I think if we teach fundamentals from the very first stages, it makes them a lot better player and they have a lot more fun."

SDSU coaches started the clinic with a discussion on fundamentals, using film and other tools to help further the knowledge of the sport. Former players such as Andrew Preston, Darryn Lewis and Ernie Lawson along with current coaches then brought participants to the Aztec Practice Field to see the fundamentals in live situations.

"A lot of the former players came out here to help teach the drills, help the coaches out and show them technique of what we were taught here at State." Preston said. "We all want to stay involved with the school and be involved as much as we can, because we love the school and we want to give back to what they gave us."
