Reaser Interview | Races

Whitney Ashley won the shot put to give the San Diego State track and field team a fourth-place finish at the Mountain West Conference Championships Saturday in Fort Collins, Colo. With yesterday's win in the discus and fourth-place showing in the hammer throw, Ashley earned the meet's high point award with 25 points.

Brigham Young won the meet with 191 points, followed by New Mexico (129), TCU (98) and the Aztecs (87.50). UNLV took fifth (82), followed by Colorado State (69), Utah (68), Wyoming (56) and Air Force (35.50).

"Keeping things in perspective, we are a good team who had some unfortunate circumstances today," head coach Shelia Burrell said. "Injuries forced us to make some difficult decisions and we ended up scratching some of our key sprinters, which hurt our relays as well. Our field athletes did an amazing job and really held our team together. We competed and represented the University well."

Ashley defeated 24 others in the shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 11 ¼ inches. It was the second-best mark in school history and 7 ½ inches ahead of runner-up Kelsey Samuels (51-03.25) of TCU. Teammate Jeanette McConnell finished fifth in a personal-best throw of 46-10.75 (No. 7 all-time at SDSU).

In the triple jump, Shanieka Thomas (41-08.00) and Alex Evans (41-06.00, No. 7 all-time) finished second and third, respectively.

On the track, Allison Reaser, who won the heptathlon two days ago, scored in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles. Reaser took sixth in the 100 hurdles (14.24 seconds) and eighth in the 400 hurdles (1:03.57).

Rounding out San Diego State's individual scorers were Maderia Toatley in the 200 (fifth, 24.56) and Josefine Koskinen in the 800 (sixth, 2:11.32).

In relay action, the 4x100 team of Shanae Roach, Lawreta Ozoh, Reaser and Toatley took sixth in 49.49.

The Aztecs are back in action from May 26-28 at the NCAA Preliminary meet (West Regionals) in Eugene, Ore.
