SAN DIEGO - San Diego State rowing Coach Jennifer Lewis has announced the signing of three athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2011-12 season. All three will enter SDSU as freshmen this fall.
The first rower signee Sarah Gannon, who currently attends The Albany Academy in Delmar, N.Y., and is a member of the crew program at the Albany Rowing Center. The 5-9 Gannon has been rowing competitively for five years and during that time has earned her 23 gold, 11 silver and three bronze medals. She plans to major in anthropology and minor in music at San Diego State.
"Sarah has had an impressive rowing career with the Albany Rowing Center," noted Lewis. "In 2010, she helped her varsity 8 win their ninth consecutive New York State Rowing Championship and went on to place 8th in the nation at the US Rowing Junior Nationals regatta. Her successful competitive background will be a great addition to our team.
Elizabeth West will arrive at SDSU from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, Calif. She is four-year competitor for the Marin Rowing Association, where she has taught the sport at numerous camps. The 5-8 West intends to major in either sports medicine or history.
"Lizzie hails from a strong rowing program and we are thrilled to have her join the Aztec Family," said Lewis. "She has really stepped it up athletically her senior year and is getting stronger and stronger. I am excited to work with her next year and continue to help her develop.
Cassandra Wilson is a novice rower who has been a tennis player and cheerleader at Redlands High School in Redlands, Calif. The 6-1 Wilson has recently taken up the sport and is expected to rapidly progress as a member of the Aztec program.
"Cassie has a great build and attitude to transition into the sport of rowing," commented Lewis. "She has already immersed herself into rowing through private lessons and is eager to learn more."
These three athletes will join the SDSU crew program in the fall along with six others who signed last November. The Aztecs recently completed their 20010-11 season at the Western Intercollegiate rowing Association (WIRA) Championships in Sacramento.
