SACRAMENTO, Calif. - San Diego State's Novice 4 boat has advanced to Sunday's grand final at the 2011 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships being contested this weekend at Lake Natoma near Sacramento. It was the Aztecs' only event of the opening day as its entries in the other three categories will compete for the titles in their respective races on Sunday as well.

On Saturday, SDSU's Novice 4 boat captured third place in the second of two heats to qualify for tomorrow's final. The Aztecs turned in a time of 8:37.2 to finish under six seconds behind first-place Seattle (8:28.4) and three seconds in back of Humboldt State (8:37.2). Sacramento State and St. Mary's finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The San Diego State crew in the Novice 4 included Courtney Siemsen (coxswain), Elyssa Aguirre (stroke), Megan Allen (three), Tatiane Werneck (two) and Samantha Flores (bow). That quintet will row in Sunday's final which is scheduled for an 8:40 a.m. start.

Women's grand final times (in which San Diego State will be competing) on Sunday include the Varsity 4+ (8:10 a.m.), Junior Varsity 8+ (10:50 a.m.) and Varsity 8+ (noon).
