Final-Round Results in PDF Format
San Diego State sophomore golfer Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) posted a final-round 72 to move from 16th all the way into a tie for sixth place Sunday at the PING/Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Wong enabled the Aztecs, who were playing their final pre-conference championship tune-up, to keep their 11th place position in the team standings with a 44-over 908 at the par-72, 6,230-yard Karsten Golf Course.
Wong moved up the individual leaderboard after each round, but recorded her biggest jump on Sunday with a 72 to go from 16th to sixth place with the help of five birdies. She finished the three-day event with a 1-over 217, which is the team's best individual performance of the spring campaign and her low 54-hole score of the season by three strokes.
Aztec senior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) made yet another dramatic rise up the individual leaderboard with her second consecutive 3-over 75, going from 73rd place after 18 holes into 49th place with a 12-over 228. Sophomore Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.), meanwhile, wasn't as lucky as she was at 2-over through the first 11 holes of the final round, but then posted four bogeys and a double bogey to card an 8-over 80 and had to settle for 54th place.
SDSU's final three golfers all were within two strokes of one another, as sophomore Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy), who was competing as an individual, tied for 74th with a 235, senior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) came in 76th with a 237 and junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) ended up 80th with a 239.
After entering the final round tied, UCLA managed to outduel No. 1 and rival USC for the team title by four strokes with a 1-under 863. A Trojan, however, claimed medalist honors as Sophia Popov won by two strokes with a 5-under 211.
San Diego State will have 11 days to prepare for the 2011 Mountain West Conference championships, which will take place at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz., April 14-16.
