SAN DIEGO - SAN DIEGO - San Diego State captured fourth place in the petite final of the Women's Collegiate Varsity Cal Cup at the annual San Diego Crew Classic Sunday morning at Crown Point Shores Park on Mission Bay. The Aztecs also took fifth in the petite final of the Novice 8 category.
In the 2,000-meter race, the Aztecs Varsity rowed to a time of 6:56.72 with only 1.8 second separating third from fifth places in the race. The petite final was won by Bates College in 6:52.90. The University of Victoria (Canada) was second in 6:53.89 followed Drexel in third (6:55.10), SDSU in fourth and St. Mary's in fifth at 6:56.91.
The Varsity 8 boat was crewed by Tanya Ochoa (coxswain), Julie Moyer (stroke), Chelsee Brewster (seven), Paige Funk (six), Michelle Boyer (five), Alyson Boyd (four), Kayla McKenna (three), Mallory Scarpello (two) and Romaine Desclos (bow).
San Diego State's Novice 8 boat finished fifth in its petite final (held Saturday afternoon) with a mark of 7:10.58 as they improved their time in Saturday's heat by over 26 seconds. Kansas State captured the race in a time of 6:54.70 followed by USC (6:57.29), Alabama (7:06.97), USD (7:10.58), SDSU, Orange Coast College (7:20.72) and UC Santa Barbara (7:25.03)
Rowing in the Novice 8 boat were Jennifer Miller (coxswain), Lindsay Miller (stroke), Katie Conlon (seven), Robyn Corcoran (six), Alex Kudlicki (five), Marissa Shaw (four), Alex Accornero (three), Elyssa Aguirre (two) and Samantha Flores (bow).
Saturday's heats saw the Aztec Varsity finish fourth in its opening heat in 6:53.95 with Kansas State crossing the line first in 6:46.10. The SDSU Novice 8 boat was fourth in its qualifying heat with a time of 7:38.63 as UCLA won that race in 7:12.00.
San Diego State's 2nd Varsity 8 (JV) boat finished seventh in its Saturday heat in 7:27.05 and did not participate in any of Saturday or Sunday's finals. That crew consisted of Vanessa Jones (Coxswain), Stefanie Krach (stroke), Kate Raymond (seven), Mia Fournier (six), Emily Walton (five), Darian Kimball (four), Erica Orgon (three), Ciara Estrada (two) and Natalie Marroquin (bow).
SDSU will be back in the water in two weeks (April 16-17) when they compete in the annual NorCal/SoCal Challenge at Ballona Creek in Marina Del Rey, Calif.
