Final Stats

PROVO, Utah - The San Diego State softball team gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 4-2 loss to Brigham Young Thursday night in Provo, Utah. The Aztecs fell to 29-17, 5-3 Mountain West Conference with the loss, while the Cougars improved to 30-15 and 6-1.

After a scoreless three innings, SDSU got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the fourth, thanks to a pair of BYU errors. Junior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) reached on an error by the Brigham Young second baseman, then moved to third when freshman Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) laced a double down the left field line. The play wasn't over, however, as the left fielder's throw to third base scooted away into the Cougar dugout, which allowed Maeva to score and put San Diego State up, 1-0.

BYU answered with two scores in the bottom half of the frame, thanks to four consecutive singles by the top of its order. J.C. Clayton singled home Kristin Delahoussaye with the first run and scored the second on Cashjen Atagi's sacrifice fly.

Senior Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) tied the game in the sixth with a two-out, solo home run over the centerfield wall. It was her sixth of the season (T-3rd on Aztecs' single-season list) and 12th of her career (T-4th on SDSU's career list).

Brigham Young's top four answered for the home team once again in the bottom of the sixth. Delahoussaye (walk) and Tiffany Messerschmidt (single) each reached base safely and, one out later, Jessica Fitu hit a two-run double just out of the reach of San Diego State left fielder Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) for the final two runs of the game.

Miles was a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run short of a cycle to pace the Aztec offense. Wisneski, junior Ashley Rose (Antioch, Calif.) and freshman Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) also had a hit for SDSU.

Junior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings. She struck out four.

San Diego State plays at Utah tomorrow (Friday), beginning at 4 p.m. MT.
