SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team travels to Fort Collins, Colo., and Colorado State for the 2011 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship. The fifth-seeded Aztecs were originally scheduled to play No. 4 UNLV on Wednesday, April 27, at 10 a.m. MT. But due to projected weather conditions, SDSU will now face the Rebels at 11 a.m. MT on Wednesday.
The Aztecs (6-15 overall, 2-4 MWC) are coming off a 5-2 defeat to 57th-ranked UNLV (14-10, 3-3 MWC) in their regular season finale in Las Vegas. SDSU won its previous two matches prior to the loss and it was just the second defeat in the last six outings for the Aztecs.
Despite the defeat, junior Javier Pulgar and freshman Juan Florez each picked up victories in singles play for San Diego State. Pulgar recorded a 6-2, 7-5 straight-set victory at No. 2 singles, while Florez posted 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at No. 5.
In the past 11 Mountain West Conference tournaments, SDSU has claimed the league championship three times (2002, 2003, 2005) and have advanced to the title match in seven of the previous 11 seasons. Last year, the Aztecs fell 4-3 to TCU in the championship match.
With a win against UNLV on Wednesday, SDSU will move on to face No. 1-seeded BYU in the semifinals at 2 p.m. MT on Friday, April 29.
