April 23, 2011

LAS VEGAS - San Diego State closed out the regular-season portion of its 2011 schedule on Saturday with a 5-2 defeat at 57th-ranked UNLV in Las Vegas. The loss snapped a modest two-game winning streak for the Aztecs and was just their second loss in the last six outings.

Junior Javier Pulgar and freshman Juan Florez each recorded victories in singles play for San Diego State. A native of San Gabriel, Calif., Pulgar posted a 6-2, 7-5 straight-set victory at number two singles. Florez, a native of Bogota, Columbia, closed out his match with a second-set tiebreaker, claiming a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at number five singles.

The Rebels improved to 14-10 overall and 3-3 in Mountain West Conference play, while the Aztecs fell to 6-15 overall and 2-4 in league action.

San Diego State now awaits seeding information for the MWC Tournament, which will be held in Fort Collins, Colo., beginning on Wednesday. In the 11 previous Mountain West Conference Tournaments, the Aztecs have claimed the league championship three times (2002, 2003 and 2005) and have advanced to the title match in seven of the 11 seasons. Last season, San Diego State fell in the championship match to TCU, 4-3.
