SAN DIEGO - International tennis standout Thorsten Bertsch has signed a National Letter of Intent with the San Diego State men's tennis program, head coach Gene Carswell announced on Friday. Bertsch will be on campus and ready for the 2011-12 campaign.

"We are very excited about signing Thorsten to SDSU," said Carswell. "He will be a strong addition to the program and his signing will add to the already strong class of freshmen entering in the fall. It is encouraging to see players of his caliber considering SDSU as a top destination for a collegiate career. I think that reflects well on the school and shows the direction this program is heading."

Bertsch has been ranked as high as No. 164 in the International Tennis Federation rankings, No. 6 amongst Germany junior players and No. 137 amongst Germany men's players.

Over the course of his career, the nineteen-year-old German has made a reputation of advancing deep into tournaments. His resume includes an ITF Grade 4 win in Germany at Brucköbel, as well as trips to the ITF Grade 4 Mönchengladbach finals and the ITF Grade 4 Netherlands semifinals.
