ALBUQUERQUE - The New Mexico men's tennis team claimed four three-set singles matches to break open a closely contested match and defeat San Diego State, 5-2, on Friday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Aztecs fell to 2-13 overall and 0-2 in Mountain West Conference play, while the victory lifted the 51st-ranked Lobos to 12-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Aztecs earned their team points with Jose Sierra Short claiming a 6-2, 6-1, straight-set victory at number six singles over Mads Hegelund and Javier Pulgar defeating Carl Ho, 6-7, 7-6, 3-1. San Diego State pushed three other singles matches to a decisive third set, but was unable to come away with a victory.
San Diego State is back in action on Sunday when the Aztecs travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Air Force. First serve is set for 10 a.m. MT.
