LOS ANGELES - The San Diego State rowing team concluded competition at this past weekend's NorCal-SoCal Challenge with two first-place finishes in head-to-head competition and another pair gold medal finishes in two three-team races. The Aztecs' three entries competed in a total of nine races (three apiece) over the two-day event that was held at Ballona Creek in Marina del Rey.

Saturday morning, SDSU's Varsity 8+ boat finished second to USD and ahead of third-place UC Davis while the 2nd Varsity 8+ boat fell to USD in a head-to-head race. The Aztecs' entry in the Varsity 4+ competition placed fourth.

In the evening session, San Diego State went head-to-head with UC Santa Barbara in each of those same three categories and was victorious in two of them. The Varsity 8+ boat won by 16 seconds with the 2nd Varsity 8+ crew claiming victory by 19 seconds. In the Varsity 4+ race it was the Gauchos claiming first place by just over four seconds.

On Sunday the Aztecs were involved in three races against both St. Mary's and UC Davis, winning two and taking second in the other. SDSU won both Varsity 8+ events and finished second to St. Mary's in the Varsity 4+.

San Diego State's crew for the Varsity 8+ races included Tanya Ochoa (coxswain), Julie Moyer (stroke), Chelsee Brewster (seven), Paige Funk (six), Michelle Boyer (five), Stefanie Krach (four), Mallory Scarpello (three), Alyson Boyd (two) and Kayla McKenna (bow).

Aztec competitors in the Second Varsity 8+ boat were Emma Peck (coxswain), Lindsay Miller (stroke), Emily Walton (seven), Darian Kimball (six), Alex Accornero (five), Mia Fournier (four), Erica Orgon (three), Ciara Estrada (two) and Natalie Marroquin (bow).

The SDSU entry in the Varsity 4+ were manned by Marissa Caldarella(coxswain), Marissa Shaw (four), Alex Kudlicki (three), Robyn Corcoran (two) and Megan Allen (one).

Up next for San Diego State are the annual Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships to be held on Saturday, April 30, at Lake Natoma near Sacramento.
