Western Intercollegiate Final Results in PDF Format
The fifth-ranked San Diego State men's golf team logged its 10th top-five finish of the season and its seventh in eight spring tournaments Sunday at the 65th annual Western Intercollegiate at the par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. The Aztecs finished their second round earlier in the morning with a 367, before knocking three strokes off that total in the afternoon with a 364 to finish the 15-team event in fifth place at 35-over 1085, nine behind No. 7 Augusta State and No. 26 Oregon, who tied for third place.
SDSU junior Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) had his best performance of the spring campaign, taking eighth with a 2-over 212, including a final-round 70. Featherstone battled back from a second-round 76 with two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars over the final 18 holes. His 212, which included 10 birdies, was three strokes better than his previous best this spring of 215 at last week's ASU Thunderbird Invitational and marked the first time he's finished as the team's top golfer this season.
Classmate Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) came in three strokes behind Featherstone with a 5-over 215 to come in 15th place, while senior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) was consistent all tournament with three rounds of 73 in a row to tie for 29th at 9-over 219.
Junior J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) became the fourth different Aztec to post an eagle on a hole at the Western Intercollegiate, helping him move up seven spots to tie freshman Todd Baek (Auckland, New Zealand) on the individual leaderboard for 39th place at 11-over 221. Sophomore Tom Berry (New Haw, England) rounded out the SDSU contingent in 52nd place with a 223.
New Mexico State's Tim Madigan posted three consecutive rounds of even par or better to win the individual title by two strokes with a 3-under 207. Third-ranked UCLA, which led throughout the weekend, ended up claiming the top team spot by eight strokes over second place USC with a 16-over 1,066.
San Diego State will have 18 days to prepare for the 2011 Mountain West Conference championships, slated for Omni Tucson National Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz., May 5-7.
