Western Intercollegiate Round 1 Results in PDF Format
After finishing the first 18 holes in a tie for second place out of 15 teams, the fifth-ranked San Diego State men's golf squad had a rough start to the second round and currently finds itself in fifth at 19-over par Saturday at the 65th annual Western Intercollegiate. The Aztecs' six players still have between two to four holes remaining to make up ground, as play was halted due to darkness before all but one team could complete the day's two scheduled rounds at the par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course.
SDSU began the event with a 4-over 354 to tie with No. 18 California and trail only third-ranked UCLA, which posted a 3-under 347. The Aztecs, however, then ran into trouble early, combining for eight bogeys, two double bogeys and a triple bogey between the six players to start the second round. Currently at 14-over par, the team is only one stroke behind both Oregon and Arizona who are tied for third place, but trail reigning national champ Augusta State by 11 strokes for second place behind the Bruins.
Junior Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) is currently in a tie for 14th place with two holes left to complete the second round at 2-over par, after beginning the day with a 71. Classmate Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) is also tied for 14th place, but only after dropping down from third place. Featherstone had an outstanding first 18 holes with five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 13th hole for a 4-under 66, but then began the afternoon round with a bogey, a triple bogey and a double bogey in his first five holes.
Sophomore Tom Berry (New Haw, England) is currently at 5-over par with two holes left in the second round to tie for 28th place, while freshman Todd Baek (Auckland, New Zealand) and senior Johan Carlsson are each tied for 34th place at 6-over par. Senior J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) carded a 2-over 72 in the first 18 holes, but has already passed that total in the second round and currently stands at 7-over in a tie for 47th.
Stanford's Andrew Yun, who is ranked fourth nationally, has the lead in the 92-player field at 3-under par with three holes still remaining in the second round.
The Aztecs will finish out the final holes of the second round Sunday morning, before starting the final 18 in the team's final pre-conference tune-up.
