In a game that featured both teams with votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, San Diego State dropped a 1-0, eight-inning decision to Brigham Young Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs fell to 27-16 and 3-2 in Mountain West Conference play with the loss, while the Cougars won their 12th consecutive game to improve to 24-14 and 2-0.
BYU's Stacie Graham hit a one-out solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to account for the only run of the game, which featured two of the best pitchers in the league.
The Graham hit was one of just three allowed by SDSU junior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.). For the game, Micetich (14-9) gave up one run on three hits and a walk over eight innings. She struck out three. Brigham Young's Paige Affleck was also up for the task, scattering five hits and three walks over 7 2/3 innings. She struck out eight before Hannah Howell got the final out for her fourth save of the season.
San Diego State had its chances, but failed to get any runs across the plate, leaving a runner on third with one out in the fifth, a runner on first and second with one out in the sixth and runners on the corners with two outs in the eighth. The Aztecs finished 2-for-12 (.167) with runners on base and 1-for-8 (.125) with runners in scoring position.
Senior Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) singled twice to lead SDSU and classmate Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) extended her career-long hitting streak to 15 games with a fifth-inning single. The 15 straight games with a hit are tied with Monica Alnes (April 15-May 13, 2006) for the longest streak by a San Diego State player in the MWC era (since 2000).
Freshmen Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) and Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) each added singles, while sophomore Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) drew a career-high two walks.
The Aztecs and Cougars will meet once again tomorrow (Saturday), beginning at 6 p.m. PT.
