SAN DIEGO - No. 46 San Diego State shut out BYU, 7-0, at Aztec Tennis Center on a hot Friday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. With the victory, SDSU moves to 6-0 in the Mountain West Conference and 15-7 overall, while the Cougars fall to 9-9 (4-2 MWC).
The Aztecs won the doubles point by winning at the top two slots. Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar were the first off the court after they dismissed Liza Ezhova and Desiree Tran, 8-3. Then No. 69 Sierra Ellison and Roxanne Ellison secured the point for San Diego State when they defeated Megan Price and Callie Craig, 8-2.
SDSU went ahead by two when Julia Trunk downed Megan Price, 6-3, 6-2. With the decision, the Aztecs' top singles player recorded her third consecutive win at the No. 1 position.
Sierra Ellison brought San Diego State to within one point of its 15th victory of the season when she beat Ezhova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The junior's triumph was her seventh singles win in a row.
The deciding point came shortly after Ellison exited the court as Emma Cioffi posted a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Tran at No. 4. Like Trunk, the decision was Cioffi's third straight.
With the outcome already decided, the Aztecs went on to log victories at Nos. 6, 2 and 3. Laura Antonana Iriarte was a three-set winner at No. 6 over Aubrey Paul, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, which marked her third consecutive win. Wais was also extended to three sets, but outlasted Craig, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. And then to wrap up the afternoon, Aguilar downed Elle Carney, 5-7, 6-1, 11-9.
San Diego State, which has won 11 of its last 12 and is in a first-place tie with Sunday's opponent UNLV, returns to the courts on Saturday when it plays host to Utah (11-9; 5-1 MWC) at noon PT. The Rebels defeated the Utes on Friday, 4-3, at Aztec Tennis Center.
