Battling 99-degree temperatures and a field made up of 14 teams ranked in the top 50 nationally, the San Diego State women's golf squad is currently in 12th place with a 12-over 300 through 18 holes Friday at the PING/Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The No. 45 Aztecs are one stroke behind 46th-ranked Oklahoma State and are just two in back of TCU and Washington, who are both tied for ninth place, at the par-72, 6,230-yard Karsten Golf Course.

SDSU sophomore Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) carded the team's low round of the day with her even-par 72. Wong was at 1-over through the first nine holes with eight pars and a bogey, but then posted birdies on three of her next six holes to get to 2-under. She ended the day, however, with a double bogey on the par-4 ninth to slip into a six-way tie for 18th place.

Senior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.), who was one of three Aztecs with three birdies in the first round, and sophomore Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) are both three strokes behind Wong at 3-over 75 to tie them for 41st out of 90 golfers. Senior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) ended the day on a high note with her lone birdie to tie for 73rd place along with junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) with an opening effort of 6-over 78.

Aztec sophomore Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy), who transferred from Arizona State last spring, is playing as an individual and is in 63rd place with a 77, highlighted by three birdies of her own.

Third-ranked UCLA owns a five-stroke advantage through 18 holes over rival and No. 1 USC with a 12-under 276. Bruin Tiffany Lua is atop the individual leaderboard by two strokes with a 5-under 67, which is two strokes better than teammate Lee Lopez, USC's Sophia Popov and Texas' Madison Pressel.

Saturday's second round gets underway for the Aztecs at 9:20 a.m. PT from the 10th tee, where they will be paired with Oklahoma State and Washington.
