SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team picked up a pair of shutout victories Thursday night on the first day of the 21st annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (8-7), who are receiving votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, downed Long Beach State, 3-0, in their opener and No. 25/23 Houston, 6-0, in the nightcap.

The 1-2 punch of senior All-American Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) and junior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) pitched well over the two games for SDSU, allowing a combined nine hits (all singles) and three walks over 14 innings, while striking out nine. Beasley (2-2) picked up the save in three innings of relief in the opener and then tossed a two-hit shutout against the Cougars (14-4) in the late game. Micetich, meanwhile, evened her record to 5-5 with four scoreless innings against the 49ers (10-6).

Offensively, redshirt senior Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) had three hits, junior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) drove in four runs and freshman Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) doubled in each of her two plate appearances.

In the first game, San Diego State took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when senior Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) scored on a single by junior Ashley Rose (Antioch, Calif.).

After leaving two runners on later in the second and bases loaded in the third, the Aztecs struck for a pair of runs in the fifth to seal the win. Junior Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) got things going when she was hit by a pitch with one out. Sophomore Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position before Maeva ripped a single into left field to end the scoring for both teams.

Micetich tossed four innings of scoreless ball, yielding four hits and two walks. She struck out three. Beasley gave up three hits and no walks, while striking out one over three innings of relief to earn her second save of the season and 10th of her career (No. 2 all-time at SDSU).

In the nightcap, San Diego State broke open a 2-0 game with four runs in the top of the seventh for its first win over a ranked opponent this season.

Camello (two RBIs, run) and Marquez (RBI, run) each had two hits to lead the offense, while Maeva added a two-run double. Klopp doubled for the second consecutive game, senior Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) had an RBI double and senior Eva Sahatdjian (Fresno, Calif.) drew two walks, giving her three on the night.

One run would have been plenty for Beasley, who tossed a complete game two-hitter. She struck out seven and walked one over seven innings.

The Aztecs continue their play in the Campbell/Cartier Classic at 6 p.m. PT Friday with a game against No. 23/rv Fresno State. SDSU won two-of-three games against the Bulldogs (6-1) last season, but lost the elimination game at the NCAA Los Angeles Regional.
