CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior Whitney Ashley won both the shot put and discus throw to help the San Diego State track and field team claim the Cal/Nevada Championships Sunday in Claremont, Calif. It was the Aztecs' first Cal/Nevada Championships title since 2008 and their sixth since 2001.

SDSU finished with 132 points, 10.5 more than runner-up Sacramento State (121.5 points). Cal State Northridge (89), UC Irvine (79.5) and UC Santa Barbara (78) rounded out the top five.

Ashley, who set the school record in the hammer throw yesterday at the meet, had another fine day on Sunday. In the discus, Ashley defeated 26 others with a toss of 163 feet, 11 inches, the fourth-best mark in school history. In the shot put, Ashley beat 25 other competitors with a throw of 50-02.75.

Three others had runner-up finishes for San Diego State, led by freshman Shanieka Thomas. Thomas, who was ninth in the triple jump at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this month, took second in the event on Sunday with a leap of 41 feet, 3 ¼ inches. The mark is the seventh-best triple jump in program history.

Sophomore Lawreta Ozoh finished second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200. Ozoh crossed the line at 11.79 seconds for the 100 and ran a 23.96 for the 200.

Freshman Allison Reaser was second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.34) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (14.02), before joining juniors Amy Brown and Kiersten Kirkland, and freshman Maderia Toatley for a seventh-place clocking in the 1,600-meter relay (3:50.55).

Both Brown and Kirkland also scored for the Aztecs in individual events. Brown was sixth in the 800 (2:12.58), while Kirkland took third in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.63.

Rounding out the scorers for SDSU was sophomore Alex Evans, who was fifth in the triple jump (40-03.50), and Niki Novak, who captured ninth in the 800 (2:14.14).

San Diego State heads to the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee heptathlon on April 7-8 and to the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., on April 9.
