SDSU 8, Pacific 0 (5 innings) | SDSU 3, No. 13/12 Stanford 2 (8 innings)

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Freshman Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning to lift the San Diego State softball team to a 3-2 victory over No. 13/12 Stanford and a two-game sweep Sunday at the Stanford Invitational. The Aztecs (20-14), who earlier defeated Pacific, 8-0, in five innings, have won six consecutive games, 10 of their last 11 and 12 of their last 15.

Against the Cardinal (22-4), Mathis was placed at second base because of the international tiebreaker and moved to third on redshirt senior Lindsey Marquez' (Tustin, Calif.) second sacrifice bunt of the game. Senior Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) then struck out swinging, but the ball skirted past Stanford catcher Maya Burns and the wild pitch allowed Mathis to score.

SDSU had a 2-0 lead on a third-inning RBI single by junior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) that scored Mathis and a fourth-inning solo home run by sophomore Kristin May (Corona, Calif.).

The host Cardinal, however, responded with two runs in the sixth to force extra innings.

After Mathis scored in the top of the eighth, senior All-American Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) stranded two Stanford runners in the bottom half to give San Diego State its second win over a nationally ranked team this season.

Maeva and Camello led the Aztecs with two hits apiece.

Beasley (7-6) got the win after striking out two in three scoreless innings of relief. The right-hander gave up two hits and five walks (three intentional) in the victory. Junior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) kept Stanford off the board with 3 1/3 scoreless innings. She gave up four hits and a walk, while striking out three. Sophomore Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) logged 1 2/3 innings in between Micetich and Beasley, yielding two runs on two hits. She struck out two.

In the opener, SDSU got by Pacific, 8-0, in five innings backed by a strong pitching effort by Kamerin May. May struck out five and allowed three hits and no walks in the shutout.

Maeva had two of the team's five hits, including a two-out, bases loaded double in the top of the third that got San Diego State on the scoreboard. Senior Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) had a two-run homer in the fourth and scored twice, while freshmen Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) and Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) each drove in a run.

The Aztecs play a home-and-home series with San Diego beginning with a 1 p.m. PT game at SDSU Softball Stadium on Saturday (April 2).
