The eighth-ranked San Diego State men's golf team is in second place through two rounds at its annual 54-hole Barona Collegiate Cup in Lakeside, Calif. The Aztecs notched a 355 through the first 18 holes, but then carded a second-round 367 and currently trail the University of San Diego by 10 strokes with a 2-over 722 Thursday at the par-72, 7,324-yard Barona Creek Golf Club.
SDSU has two of its seven golfers in the individual top 10 with junior J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) sitting in a tie for fifth place with a 3-under 141, highlighted by a second-round 70 with five birdies. Sophomore Tom Berry (New Haw, England) opened the tournament with a 70, including four birdies and just two bogeys, and trails his teammate by just two strokes with a 143 to tie for eighth place.
Junior Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) notched back-to-back even-par rounds to tie for 15th, while senior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) got off to a solid start with a team-low 69, but then managed only a 76 in the afternoon to drop from fifth to 17th place with a 145. Freshman Todd Baek (Auckland, New Zealand) is the third SDSU player in the top 40 with his 5-over 149. Junior Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) had a disappointing day with his 12-over 156 to tie for 81st place and redshirt sophomore Evan Emerick (Oceanside, Calif.), who is competing as an individual, is tied for 86th with a 158.
UC Santa Barbara's Glen Sher has a slim one-stroke lead in the individual race with a 7-under 137 over Nevada's Scott Smith. Two USD Toreros are tied for third place at 5-under par, including Alex Ching, who shot a field-best 64 with eight birdies and no bogeys in the afternoon.
