The San Diego State women's golf team took 10 strokes off its second-round score, posting a 23-over 311 in the final day of the 54-hole 2011 Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn. Defending national champion Purdue maintained its first-place position, winning the inaugural event by seven strokes over top-ranked USC, which barely edged rival UCLA for second place. The Boilermakers carded a 292 for the second consecutive round to end up at 15-over 879, while also garnering top individual honors as Laura Gonzalez blew away the field, which included six squads in the national top 10, with her 7-under 209. Trojan Lizette Salas and UNLV's Therese Koelbaek were the only other golfers to also finish under par by tying for second at 1-under 215.
Just one Aztec, sophomore Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.), managed to climb the individual leaderboard in the final 18 holes. Clark bounced back from an 81 on Monday to post her second 1-over 73 of the week. She began the day with a triple bogey on the 10th hole, but stormed back with three birdies to get back to even par halfway through the round. Clark ended with one bogey and eight pars in her final nine holes to move from 36th into a tie for 25th place at 11-over 227.
Senior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) was the only SDSU student-athlete to post three sub-80 rounds, but dropped from 32nd to 47th place with her second consecutive 79. Sophomore Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) had her best 18 holes of the tournament with her 6-over 78 to maintain her 65th-place slot, while junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomore Alyssia Knight (Bologna, Italy) were unable to get below the 80-barrier for the third day in a row, finishing 81st and 88th respectively.
The Aztecs had two other players competing as individuals with senior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) knocking 10 strokes off her second-round total with a 5-over 77 to tie Enarsson for 81st place with a 244. Redshirt freshman Rebecca Schneider (Cave Creek, Calif.), meanwhile, came in 93rd place with a 262.
San Diego State will take a 10-day break before playing in its final regular-season event, the Arizona State PING Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., April 1-3.
