Battling hail, wind and several morning downpours, the San Diego State women's golf team dropped into 16th place with a second-round 33-over 321 Monday at the inaugural 2011 Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn. The Aztecs are at 54-over 630 for the tournament and trail New Mexico for 15th place by a single stroke, while they are only three behind 14th place Oregon at the par-72, 6,336-yard championship course.

SDSU had just one player, senior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.), post a sub-80 second-round score. Arcala was at 3-over par through the first 13 holes, including a streak of five consecutive pars, but then triple bogeyed the par-4 seventh and ended the day with a 79. Arcala dropped from 19th to a tie for 32nd place on the individual leaderboard with a 9-over 153.

Aztec sophomore Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) carded four birdies in her first 18 holes, but couldn't match that performance Monday, logging an 81 with three double-bogeys and just one birdie to currently stand in a tie for 36th with a 154. Classmate Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) fired her second consecutive 80 to tie for 66th place, while both junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomore Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy) slightly improved their second-round scores to move into 79th and 85th place, respectively.

SDSU senior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) and redshirt freshman Rebecca Schneider (Cave Creek, Ariz.), who are competing as individuals, both saw significant increases in their scores, as Roberts shot an 87 and Schneider came into the club house with a 92.

Reigning national champion Purdue posted the best round by any squad in the tournament thus far with its 4-over 292 to move from third into first place with a seven-stroke advantage over top-ranked USC. The Boilermakers also have the top individual with Laura Gonzalez coming in with a 3-under 141, including a second-round 71. Gonzalez leads the only other player in the 95-golfer field to be under par, UNLV's Therese Koelbaek, by a single stroke.

Tuesday's final 18 holes begin with tee times as early as 8 a.m. PDT from both the No. 1 and No. 10. The Aztecs will be paired with TCU and will start at 8:54 a.m.
