SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team had a rough outing on Saturday, losing to East Tennessee by a score of 5-2 to finish fourth at the 2011 SDSU-USD Invitational. With the loss, the Aztecs drop to 2-10 on the 2011 campaign.
SDSU had a promising start to their match with ETSU, winning the opening doubles match at the No. 1 position courtesy a Hunter Nicholas and Giovanni Vaglietti victory over ETSU's Grega Teraz and Charles Bottoni, 8-5. That would be the last lead the Aztecs would see in doubles play, however, as they lost consecutive matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to surrender the point the ETSU.
In singles play, the Aztecs came out hot with first-set wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6. However, after Juan Florez gave SDSU its first point by defeating ETSU's Jeremy Bonnevalle at the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 6-1, the Bucs broke out with victories at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions to give ETSU a 3-1 lead that they never gave back. The Aztecs were able to get a second singles point when Andre Feliz defeated ETSU's Juan Ramirez in three sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, but it proved to be too little too late, as the Aztecs fell 2-5.
SDSU will return to action on Friday, March 25, when they take on San Francisco at 2 p.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center. The match will be the last home event in March for the Aztecs, who depart for a four-contest road trip at the end of the month.
