SAN DIEGO - The 62nd-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team won its second consecutive match after cruising past Syracuse, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. The victory moves SDSU to the .500 mark at 6-6.
The Aztecs continued their stellar doubles play and claimed the point after taking two of three matches. The 54th-ranked duo of Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar experienced zero issues with Alessondra Parra and Simone Kalhorn and posted an 8-3 victory.
The Orange leveled the score when its top doubles team of Emily Harman and Maddie Kobelt upset No. 44 Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison, 8-3. The Aztecs, however, responded at No. 3 as Emma Cioffi and Julia Trunk recorded an 8-6 win to pocket the point for SDSU.
Wais and Aguilar provided San Diego State with a commanding 3-0 lead with their victories at Nos. 2-3. Wais notched an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Kobelt and was followed by Aguilar's hard-fought, 6-2, 7-6(3) decision over Parra.
Syracuse, which was edged 4-3 by No. 9 USC earlier in the week, got on the scoreboard later when Kalhorn was a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victor in her match with Sierra Ellison. Holding a 3-1 lead, San Diego State closed the door on the Orange when Olivia Colman pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 win over Aleah Marrow at No. 6.
With the decision already in the books, Trunk and Cioffi put the final touches on the win by defeating Harman and Christina Tan, respectively, at No. 1 and No. 4.
The Aztecs return to action on Thursday when they play host to Denver. Doubles action will kick things off beginning at 2 p.m. PT.
