COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior All-American Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) has been named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the period ending March 6, the league announced last night. It is the right-hander's first honor or the season and 14th weekly award of her career, the most in MWC history.
Over the first five games of the 21st Campbell/Cartier Classic (the Aztecs also played on Tuesday), Beasley went 1-1 with a 1.24 ERA over 17 innings in the circle. She had one solo shutout and combined on another, and also picked up a save. Beasley had 15 strikeouts against three walks and limited the opposition, which included two nationally ranked schools, to a .190 average.
Last Thursday, Beasley tossed a combined 10 scoreless innings as SDSU went 2-0. Against Long Beach State, which went 4-1 and won the Campbell/Cartier Classic, she allowed three hits over three scoreless frames. Beasley struck out three and picked up her second save of the season in San Diego State's 3-0 victory. In the nightcap, Beasley allowed just two hits (both singles) over seven innings in the Aztecs' 6-0 win over No. 25/23 Houston. She struck out seven and walked one.
On Saturday, Beasley held defending national champion and No. 6/9 UCLA to three runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings in SDSU's 3-1 loss. She struck out seven Bruins and walked two.
On the year, Beasley is 2-4 with a 3.29 ERA over 51 innings, and leads the MWC in saves (2) and opponents' batting average (.216).
San Diego State travels to College Station, Texas, to compete in the Aggie Invitational beginning tomorrow (March 11). The Aztecs will play No. 22/24 Texas A&M and Mississippi Valley State twice and Louisiana Tech once over the three-day tournament.
