LOS ANGELES - The 60th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team was swept by No. 17 USC, 7-0, in Los Angeles Tuesday. The Aztecs fall to 3-2 on the season, while the Women of Troy improve to 4-1.
In doubles, Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais were trailing 6-3 at No. 1 before making a strong comeback to defeat the 11th-ranked duo Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos 8-6.
Unfortunately that match wasn't enough to take the doubles point as the Trojans were victorious in the other two matches. This was the first match of 2011 where SDSU did not succeed at taking the doubles point.
The day's singles matches were also hard-fought, but the Aztecs could not come away with the decision. At No. 4, 114th-ranked Kaitlyn Christian faced SDSU's Sierra Ellison in the closest match of the day. Christian's 5-0 lead in the second set was met by Ellison hard as it soon became a 5-5 tie. The match then fell in USC's favor as Ellison took a 7-5 loss and, in turn, dropped the decision.
Sierra Ellison's sister and the other half of the 27th-ranked duo of Ellison/Ellison, Roxanne Ellison did not play against USC due to an ankle injury she suffered against Washington the previous week.
The Aztecs will face No. 58 Arizona at Aztec Tennis Center this Friday at 2 p.m. PT.
