SAN DIEGO - The No. 58 San Diego State women's tennis squad dropped its first match of 2011 on Saturday, falling to No. 15 Washington, 6-1, at Aztec Tennis Center. The loss puts the Aztecs at 3-1 for the season, while the Huskies improve to 5-0.
SDSU's day started on a fine note as it won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, but it was not without a price. Roxanne Ellison of the 27th-ranked duo of Ellison-Sierra Ellison suffered an ankle injury and the team was forced to retire in their match at No. 1. Julia Trunk and Emma Cioffi, meanwhile, evened things with their 8-3 triumph over Adrijana Pavlovic and Lina Xu at No. 3. Then with the doubles point on the line, Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais earned a tough 9-7 victory at No. 2 over Andjela Nemcevic and Samantha Smith to give the Aztecs the early lead.
In singles, however, Washington turned tables on San Diego State and won all six matches. Despite being on the wrong end of the score, four matches were tightly contested. At No. 1, Trunk dropped a three-setter to No. 6 Denise Dy, 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-2. At the next slot in the order, Aguilar hung tough in her match with No. 55 Venise Chan, 7-5, 6-2. Wais, meanwhile, was edged at No. 3 in her match with Smith, 6-3, 6-7(7), 10-5. At No. 4, Sierra Ellison fell in her match with Nemcevic, 7-5, 7-5.
San Diego State returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 8, when it plays at USC. First serve is slated for 1:30 p.m. PT.
