FRESNO, Calif -- The San Diego State men's tennis team received a straight-set victory from Matthew Tosches at number six singles but it wasn't enough, as 32nd-ranked Fresno State handed the Aztecs a 6-1 loss on Friday.
The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the season, while the 50th-ranked Aztecs dropped to 3-1.
San Diego State came close to earning the doubles point. The teams split the number two and three doubles matches, with Juan Florez and Javier Pulgar recording an 8-5 victory for the Aztecs at number three. At number one, Giovanni Vaglietti and Hunter Nicholas pushed the 21st-ranked doubles team to a tiebreaker, before dropping a 9-8 (5) decision to Rikus de Villeirs and Remi Boutillier, giving the Bulldogs the doubles point.
In singles matches, Fresno State claimed the first five points, winning singles matches one through five, before Tosches won the final point of the day for SDSU.
"I felt the guys competed really well in doubles but just came up a little short," San Diego State assistant coach Jeff Thomsen said." We are looking forward to tomorrow's match against another tough opponent."
San Diego State takes to the courts again on Saturday, when the Aztecs face 15th-ranked Texas Tech. Match time in Fresno is set for 2 p.m. PT.
