CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -
Sophomore Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) and freshman Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) each homered and junior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) tossed a three-hitter to lead the San Diego State softball team to a 10-2 victory over Florida State Saturday night at the Cathedral City Classic.
The Aztecs (6-6), who are receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball national poll, scored 10 runs on nine hits over the first three innings for their second run-rule win of the season.
The Seminoles (9-7), who are receiving votes in both national polls, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Tiffani Brown scored on a SDSU fielding error.
San Diego State responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, five in the second and two more in the third. Florida State's Ashley Stager stopped the bleeding in the fourth with a solo home run, but the Seminoles couldn't get another score in the fifth to keep the game going.
Klopp homered and doubled to pace the Aztec offense. This season, six of Klopp's seven hits are for extra bases (four home runs, two doubles).
Redshirt senior Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.), meanwhile, had two hits, including a triple, two runs and two RBIs, while junior Ashley Rose (Antioch, Calif.) was 2-for-2 with an RBI double and a run scored.
Freshman Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) reached base safely two times (single, walk) and scored twice, and senior Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) and junior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) each drove in a run.
Micetich (4-4) allowed two of her three hits in the first inning and just one earned run (a fourth inning homer by Ashley Stager) over five frames to pick up her fourth win of the season. She struck out six without issuing a walk.
SDSU meets No. 3/1 Arizona at 3 p.m. PT Sunday in the final game of the Cathedral City Classic.
