HONOLULU - The 62nd-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team's rally came up just short in a neutral-site contest vs. Cal State Northridge on Friday. The Aztecs were on the wrong side of a 4-3 score at the University of Hawai'i and fall to 3-5 after the decision.
In doubles, SDSU took the early edge when Julia Trunk and Emma Cioffi were 8-1 winners over Nina Jaworowski and Anna Yang at No. 2. The Matadors, however, would rally to win the next two matches at Nos. 1 and 3 to claim the point.
San Diego State's 1-0 deficit soon turned into a 3-0 hole and the Aztecs were backed into a corner. Despite the setback, SDSU slowly chipped away, starting with Sierra Ellison's 6-3, 6-1 win over Nigora Sirojiddinova at No. 4. The decision snapped Ellison's four-match slide.
Julia Wais then gave the Aztecs their second point with her straight sets triumph over Jaworowski at No. 4. Like Ellison, Wais snapped a lengthy losing skid, which had reached five matches.
Trailing 3-2, San Diego State received the equalizing point at the top of the order when Trunk gutted out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision over Brooke Doane. The win put a stop to her four-match losing streak.
Then with the match on the line and having split the first two sets, Alicia Aguilar could not solve Jennifer Sher at No. 2 and ultimately fell, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, which gave CSUN the team victory.
San Diego State returns to action on Saturday when it takes on Hawai'i at 11 a.m. HT.
